Dan Nielsen and TeamPit, Fulda, MN, have been traveling some of the barbecue circuits during the past three and one-half years. They are having fun, enjoying the travel, and earning recognition for their rubs, sauces, and cooking skills.

Most recently, Nielsen joined up with  friend Mike Thompson, Rochester, MN, who is known as True Smoke, and brought home three ribbons from the 37th Annual Americal Royal World Series Barbecue®. The competition was held at the Kansas City Speedway, October 26th through the 30th.  The ribbons included one that ranked the TeamPit and True Smoke team as number eight overall.

“About 30 years ago, we bought a Pit in Texas and brought it home to Minnesota.  We’ve been making our own rubs and sauces and trying a bunch of different recipes and techniques,” Nielsen shared. It wasn’t until three years ago that they started on the professional barbecue circuits. One day, while attending an event in Mankato, Nielsen commented to his wife, Glenda, that the food being barbecued in front of them didn’t match up to what he would expect. ‘A gentleman wearing bibbed overalls was standing behind us. He heard what I said and started asking me if I was a professional barbecuer. I answered more and more questions from him and finally had to walk away. I told Glenda that I would meet her in the car,” he recalled.
