1929 – Edward Henry Suedbeck Jr. – 2016

Edward Henry Suedbeck was born July 1,1929 in Adrian, Minnesota the son of Edward and Margaret (Schutz) Suedbeck. Ed moved to Slayton with his family and attended Slayton High School, graduating in 1947. On November 3,1951, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Jacobson. Ed joined the United States Army and served in Korea; he was awarded the Purple Heart, the United Nations Service Award as well as three Bronze Service Stars. Ed then returned to Slayton, where he worked for the City Dairy for a short time before beginning service with the Slayton Post Office. He worked as a Rural Mail Carrier for 35 years before his retirement in 1996. Ed was known for his punctuality and was NEVER late for ANYTHING. He served on the Slayton Fire Department for 22 years and was also Fire Chief for eight of those years. He also was a member of the Slayton City Council and was Mayor of Slayton for 10 years. In addition, he was past president of the Slayton Chamber of Commerce and served on numerous boards and committees. Ed was also a member of the American Legion Post #64 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6322. Ed enjoyed golfing, spending time with family and friends and could often be seen about town with a toothpick in his mouth. Ed passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at The Wellstead of Rogers, MN at the age of 89.

Ed is survived by his wife, Mary Ann and three children: Kari (Thomas) Podenski, Kathy (Rodney) Peterson and Scott (Michele) Suedbeck; five grandchildren: Sarah (Jacob) Sinderbrand, Zachary (Christina) Podenski, Reid Peterson, Jack and Jadyn Suedbeck and one great grandson Carlo Podenski; two brothers: John Suedbeck and Harvey (Violet) “Vi” Suedbeck and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother Charles; two brothers and their spouses: Fred “Fritz” and Charlotte and Clifford and Dorothy Suedbeck; one sister and her husband, Genevieve “Gen” and Robert “Bob” Spartz and one sister in law Margaret Suedbeck. Edward will be dearly missed by family and friends whom he cared for and deeply loved

  Memorial services will be held at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Tim Biren officiating.  The organist is Judy Andrews.  The song leader is LoAnn Hanson.  The honorary pallbearers are Charles Suedbeck, Dennis Suedbeck, Steven Suedbeck, Douglas Suedbeck, Mark Suedbeck, and Lee Suedbeck.  Interment is at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Slayton, MN. Military honors accorded by the Slayton American Legion Post and the Slayton VFW Post. Visitation will be on Friday, September 16, 2016 at the Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
