1927 – Lewis Adams Hudson – 2019
Ardell Anton Cassens was born o Lewis Adams Hudson, 91, Baxter, died on June 12, 2019.
Mr. Hudson, retired journalist and author, was born October 11, 1927 at Fort Worth, Texas, to the Rev. Loren R. and Margaret Elizabeth Adams Hudson. A graduate of Bloomfield Iowa High School and an alumnus of Drake University, he spent 12 years in radio and 31 in newspaper reporting, finishing his career in 1992 as senior reporter with The Brainerd Dispatch. He was recognized 15 times in state, regional and national reporting competitions.
In addition to his reporting, he wrote three books, “From New Cloth,” a history of Worthington, Minnesota, “Jackson County History 1910-79,” an archaeological report entitled “Wolff Mound,” and was a contributing author of “100 Minnesota Fishing Trips.” A book of his columns was published by his daughter Rebecca as “Dispatches From Our Corner of the Globe.”
His civic efforts included chairing four blue ribbon citizen commissions, prompting the Worthington League of Women Voters to give him their Community Service Award in 1981.
As a freelance writer, he was Southwest Field Editor of “Minnesota Sportsman” magazine from 1976-86 and wrote for the “Minnesota Conservation Volunteer,” “Corporate Reports” magazine and “Minneapolis-St. Paul” magazine.
He chaired a citizen advisory committee on facilities for the Brainerd School Board in the late 1980’s and was subsequently elected to the board serving 15 1/2 years, including three years as board chair. He was named a member of the Minnesota Association of School Boards “2010 All State School Board” honorary member.
He also served four years as executive director of the Rosenmeier Center and adjunct faculty member at Central Lakes College teaching courses in political science and journalism. In addition, he served eight years on the Crow Wing County RSVP Board and one term on the Mental Health Advisory Committee of St. Joseph’s Medical Center.
An active member of the Presbyterian Church for most of his life, he was six times called to duty as an elder. In addition, he served as Presbytery Moderator, Commissioner to General Assembly, Commissioner to the Synod of Lakes and Prairies and for more than 25 years was a lay pulpit supply preacher.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in July, 1945, serving until he was honorably discharged in September, 1946.
Mr. Hudson was married on January 4, 1950 in Boone, Iowa, to Irma Marie Anthony, who survives as do their four children, LuAnn Hudson (Mark), St. Paul, Cynthia Hudson Spartz (Doug), Pine River, Rebecca Hudson (David), Slayton and Frederick Hudson (Jody), Fargo. Also four granddaughters, three grandsons, three great-granddaughters, three great-grandsons and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
