1929 – Harriet Joyce Schmidt- 2019

Harriet Schmidt was born on April 12, 1929, in Sheldon, Iowa to Henry and Annetta Solsma Kruisselbrink.  She grew up in Sanborn and attended the Christian School there.  Harriet moved with her family to Woodstock, MN in 1943. There she worked as a Telephone Operator and for area families as a hired girl.  On October 6, 1948, she and Henry E.  Schmidt were married at the American Reformed Church in Woodstock, MN.  Following their marriage, they made their home on a farm northeast of Woodstock for one year before moving to a farm south of Woodstock.  In 1951 they moved to a farm north of Woodstock and in 1953 they moved to Ruthon, MN. Harriet did in-home daycare for many years.  In 1974 they moved to an acreage west of Slayton until 2006, then moved into town for 10 years.  They then moved to Sterling Point Assisted Living in Princeton, MN to be near family.  Harriet passed away there on Sunday, October 6, 2019, at the age of 90, on what would be their 71st wedding anniversary.   She was a former member of the American Reformed Church in Woodstock and a current member of the First Reformed Church in Slayton where she was active in the women’s group and taught Sunday school and catechism.  Harriet also was a member of the Murray County Women’s Extension Club and of the Christian Women’s Club.  Harriet enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, embroidery, doing crafts, gardening, and floral arranging.  

Survivors include her husband, Henry E. Schmidt of Princeton, MN, five children and their spouses, Gary and Tammy Schmidt of Grasston, MN, Wanda and Steve Hourscht of Big Lake, MN, Glenda Schmidt Kimpling of Cambridge, MN, Terry and Ruth Schmidt of Katy, TX, and Kevin and Kim Schmidt of Faribault, MN, 13 grandchildren, Linnea Beckmann, Kenneth and Mackenzie Hoffman, Dennis Hoffman and Carla and Brandon Jansen, Christy and Mark Dougherty, Stephanie and AJ Earleywine, Meghan Kimpling, Sarah Schmidt, Matthew and Hailey Schmidt, and Jason and Breanna Schmidt, and Amber and Cory Madrid, Kara and Blade Bursch and Jaimie Schmidt,  nine great-grandchildren, two sisters, Evelyn VanNieuwenhuyzen of Pipestone, MN, and Wilma Van Perseum and her husband, Jerry of Marcell, MN. Two sisters-in-law, Aleanor Taylor and her husband, Clarence of Pipestone, MN, and Mavis Kruisselbrink of Chandler, MN.  She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Magdalen Kruisselbrink, and four brothers, Jake and his wife, Betty, Howard and his first wife, Wilma, Willys, and Elmer Kruisselbrink and one brother-in-law, Peter VanNieuwenhuyzen. 

Funeral Services will be held at First Reformed Church in Slayton, MN on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Aaron Punt officiating.  The organist is Joan Friese with special music by Brad and Kim Kruisselbrink and Stacy Kruisselbrink.  The pallbearers are her grandchildren.  Interment is at Woodstock Cemetery in Woodstock, MN. 

Visitation will be on Friday, October 11, 2019, at the First Reformed Church in Slayton from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30. Also visitation one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.  Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton is entrusted with arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, the memorial may be directed to The Gideons or Hospice.  To send condolences visit totzkefuneralhome.com
