Celebrating a century; American Legion continues to care for veterans

A century ago, The American Legion was founded by veterans who had a post-war mission. Their mission, one that continues today, was to care for veterans, provide patriotic programs for our nation’s youth, advocate for a strong national defense and instill a societal pride in what it means to be American Legion family.

The following information was received from Brad Pagel, president of Slayton Post #64. The namesake of each post, according to Pagel, was to be a World War I deceased member. He also stated the centennial posts will be recognized during the 2020 Murray County Fair.

The Erwin March Post #64 was initially organized on August 25, 1919, with its official inception on August 27, 1920. Brad Pagel currently serves as the commander with Merlyn Anderson as Adjutant.

The Herbert Holtke Post #285, Lake Wilson was organized on October  17, 1919, and officially recognized on October 29, 2020. Commander is Andrew Edmundson with Jim Oslund as Adjutant.

Fulda’s Emil King Post #318 was started on October 27, 1919, and became official on August 10th of 1921. Steve Magnus is commander while William Fuerstenberg is the Adjutant.

In Currie, the Lionel Boudreau Post was formed on October 28, 1919, and earned its official recognization on February 13, 1922. The current commander is Richard Luft with Michael J. Schaffer as Adjutant.

The Avoca Post #576, named Donald Ewy, began on May 20, 1946, and became official on September 22, 1948. Gary Fiedler is the current commander / Adjutant – Adam Pick.

Chandler’s Ezra Barrows Post #338 started on October 11, 1935, and fully recognized on January 2, 1948. LeRoy Buys is currently serving as the commander for this post.

The Dovray Post #632 began on October 23, 1947, and earned its official start on February 4, 1949. Paul Vosberg is commander and Jordan D. Dibble served as adjutant.
