Residents of the area learned Slayton Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center (formerly Golden Living Center) will close its doors. The news sent shock waves through the community. The loss of 65 jobs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in salaries that regularly circulate through the town will be hard to weather.

The following statement was issued to the local newspapers: After careful and thoughtful consideration, the Board of Directors of Slayton Rehab has made the difficult decision to close the Slayton Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Slayton, MN. CEO, Avi Katz, stated that “Today is a sad day for the Slayton families, for the Slayton community, for the residents of our care center and for the employees who have cared for so many community members throughout the years.”

According to the statement, the decision to close was a joint decision made solely by the building owner and operator, Superior Healthcare Management. The decision to close, according to them was based on the average daily occupancy of the care center which had been declining over the past few years. The Minnesota Department of Health has approved the closure as of Monday, May 20, 2019.

Additionally, the facility is being ‘delicensed’ which means it’s too late to sell and cannot legally operate as a nursing home.

Representatives for the facility commented, “We are working with Slayton Rehab and Care representatives on relocation plans for the 38 residents who reside in the building.  We are also working with Southwest Health and Human Services in the closure plans.”

According to them, the Slayton Rehab and Care employees, health and human services staff and the local long-term care ombudsman will be assisting residents and family members in choosing new housing and care options for the 38 residents of the facility.
