The MCC Rebels celebrated homecoming this past week if you can call it celebrating. With all the fun events going on throughout the week the football team was dealing with a difficult week that included losing their starting quarterback to an injury and a couple other players for a few days illness. By the time Friday rolled around Coach Freeman and the rest of the coaching staff was just hoping nothing else out of the normal would go wrong. MCC hosted Sleepy Eye Public a team with an 0-2 record but far more talent than a team with that record should have.

The MCC Cross Country team ran the ball in from Sleepy Eye as is tradition with MCC Homecoming and the fans loved it. What the Cross Country team learned while running the over 70 miles from Sleepy Eye to Slayton was that it was hot, and the football team was about to learn all about the heat. With two starters missing from the offensive side of the ball and one missing from the defensive side MCC had to make some changes. Blake Schmitz a freshman took over as the starting QB. Braylon Jacobson would be playing both ways starting at center and at defensive tackle. With the open starting spot at defensive end Caiden Like moved into the starting lineup and was playing both ways. Playing both ways is never easy let alone on the hottest night of the season.

MCC used all the built up energy for the big game to get off to a great start, The opening kick was returned to the ten yard line and a penalty on the Indians moved them back inside their ten. MCC’s defense has been great so far this season and they forced a three and out as Sleepy Eye picked up a few yards on short runs. After a penalty the Indians lined up to punt but the snap was over the head of Zachary Haala and through the end zone for a safety giving the Rebels a quick 2-0 lead.
