The Rebels have faced some very different opponents this season. In Week 1 a physical team that liked to throw, Week 2 a team that liked to throw it all over, Week 3 a team that was a big no-nonsense running team, and in Week 4 another team that used a deceptive running game. The Rebels have seen a wide variety of teams and styles this season and in each case, the Rebels have come away with a win. Homecoming night against New Ulm Cathedral was no different in terms of a win or loss but how the Rebels got there was.

The first half saw the Rebels scored first which is a bit different than the last couple of games but MCC’s defense held up on the Greyhounds first drive forcing a punt. MCC’s first drive was long and short. Mason Woldt completed a pass to Danny Blankenship who broke a tackle and got a good block by Justin Benda on his way to a 61-yard touchdown. Woldt completed the two-point conversion and the Rebels took the lead 8-0.

The Greyhounds answered back three minutes later in a drive that started with special teams. Zach Helget returned the kickoff from the 15-yard line to inside the Rebels 40. New Ulm Cathedral moved down the field quickly using their Michigan T offense which was difficult to tell who had the ball. Mark Schommer scored on a short touchdown run but the two-point conversion failed and the Rebels remained in the lead 8-6 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Rebels actually fell behind. The Rebels went on a long drive after the Greyhounds score and MCC would get inside the New Ulm Cathedral 25 yard line. That is when the Rebels struggle and turn the ball over on downs when they failed to pick up a first down. The Greyhounds next drive was short-lived but like the Rebels opening drive long. Sam Knowles the freshman QB for New Ulm Cathedral faked a handoff and looked to throw deep. The Rebels dove in on the handoff fake that allowed Elliot Schoo to run free down the left sideline. Knowles pass was thrown perfectly and Schoo pulled it in and sprinted to the end zone for a 79-yard touchdown and Schommer scored on the two points conversion to put the Greyhounds on top 14-8. The Rebels were not done.
