The process hasn’t been easy but the mural for Slayton is on to the second leg of the project.

Initial buzz on the mural started with the Monday study club. A group was formed to seek out possible grant opportunities and the steps involved in order to receive these funds.

The initial grant, received from the Southwest Arts Council, helped to build awareness of the projected project and gather interested individual’s ideas on what the mural might entail. Focus groups were formed and a couple of social events were held to gather input from as many people as possible.

Chad Recker, MCC art instructor, gave the survey information to his art class. They, in turn, did some drawings to help the public kind of visualize what the white wall on the south side of the pocket park might look like when the project was finished. Injected into their drawings were tractors, wildlife, landscapes, community involvement, as well as education.

Since then, the eight-member committee interviewed three different artists to complete the painting on the wall. Each artist was given the survey results and also visions from the committee themselves. From there, the individual is to design a mural that fulfills, in their opinion, what the committee envisions for the mural. Their vision for this space is due back to the committee the first week in January. From there, the group will vote and decide which artist will be chosen for the mural. The group’s next meeting is scheduled for January 8th at which time they will discuss the artist and choose a design.
