Morgan Gehl wins at Madison by 90 seconds; Rebel varsity girls finish second in 10-team meet

Paced once again by the winning performance of sophomore Morgan Gehl, the Murray County  Central / Fulda varsity girls’ cross country team made an excellent team showing at the 10-team Lac qui Parle Valley / Dawson-Boyd Invitational last Tuesday (September 18) at the Madison Golf Course.

Gehl completed the 5,000-meter distance in a sensational time of 18:48.72, entering the finish chute 90 seconds before individual runner-up Isabel Schirm of LQPV / D-B (20:18.18).

Five of Gehl’s teammates placed among the top 28 runners in the field of 71 individual finishers, combining their performances to give the Rebels a second-place team finish.

Eighth-grade twin sisters Ashley Overgaauw (14th, 22:23.18) and Amanda Overgaauw (15th, 22:25.34) again ran very well, finishing just over two seconds apart. Freshman Ryanna Schreier (19th, 22:45.94) and sophomore Josie Harms (25th, 23:04.22) completed MCC / Fulda’s scoring (1-14-15-19-25) tallying a total of 74 points.

Host LQPV / D-B won the team title with a low score of 45 (2-5-7-8-23). Milbank (South Dakota) was third with a score of 91 (13-17-18-21-22), followed by Pipestone Area (101), Redwood Valley (111), Ortonville (184), St. James (192) and Montevideo (194). Lakeview and MACCRAY / Renville County West were both incomplete.

Freshman Ella Stapek gave the Rebels a strong sixth-runner performance at Madison, finishing 28th with a fine time of 23:18.86, just 14.64 seconds behind Harms.
