The Murray County Central Rebels were in Adrian on Friday as they were looking to slay the dragons and kill a streak. The Rebels had failed to beat the Dragons in the regular season since the fall of 1996. That is 22 years of losing to one team at least once each year. Now the Rebels have knocked off the Dragons in the playoffs three times during that stretch but never in the regular season. The Rebels looked to end the streak of the Dragons and continue their push to a District Title and home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The Rebels opened the game with the football and the Rebels put up two big plays right away. The first play was a 22-yard pass from Mason Woldt to Danny Blankenship to get the ball near midfield. The second play was a Mason Woldt designed run behind fullback Noah Boerboom for 39 yards and a first down. MCC was off to a great start and the Rebels again went big with Mason Woldt throwing a pass into the end zone where it fell into the welcoming arms of Brandon Schnoor of the Adrian Dragons. The turnover cost the Rebels a chance to score and ended what would have been a terrific drive to open the game.

MCC got the ball back four plays later on a punt from Adrian. MCC then scored the first points of the game with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter. Mason Woldt pushed his way in for the score as the Rebels took the lead on the senior QB’s only touchdown run of the game covering two yards. He kicked the extra point giving the Rebels a 7-0 lead.

The Dragons answered back in quarter two. The Rebels were forced to punt from deep in their own territory. The Dragons got the ball at the Rebels 47-yard line to begin a drive. The Dragons put together a steady drive to tie the game at seven points each. The Dragons’ longest play on the drive was 11 yards. Adrian was patient moving the ball two to four yards on nearly every play until they were inside the five-yard line. Brandon Schnoor finished the drive with a four-yard touchdown with 10:06 to play in the second quarter. Dominiq Heser-Canales kicked the extra point and the game was tied up. The Rebels lost the ball before they even got it back when Heser Canales’ kick hit one of the Rebel blockers and bounced right back into the hands of the Rabbits. The Rebels and the Dragons went scoreless the rest of the first half and took the 7-7 tie into the half.
