Twenty-two schools attend fair in Slayton

The Murray County Fairgrounds were filled once again…this time with 5th and 6th-grade students attending the 2018 Environmental Fair. This 1-day event provides a fun-filled day learning about the world around us through demonstrations and student participation. Some of the topics covered include; planetarium/star quest, rainfall simulator, water jeopardy, glaciers, tree trivia, wetlands, prairies, household hazardous waste, native Minnesota wildflowers, recycling, soil texture, reptiles, energy connections, wind simulator, pollinators, birds of Minnesota, fish facts and species, basics of agronomy, shoreline and much more.! The goal of the Southwest Minnesota Environmental Fair is to let students study natural resources in a setting that will give them the opportunity to see and touch what they are learning about.

Educators and presenters are from local county SWCDs and watershed groups, such as Southwest Minnesota Area V Employees Association and the Southwest Minnesota Area V Supervisors Association, Murray SWCD along with Brown, Cottonwood, Jackson, Lac Qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Rock and Yellow Medicine SWCDs, as well as the Science Museum of Minnesota, Minnesota Zoo, Prairie Ecology Bus Center, University of Minnesota Extension, Minnesota Department of Resources, Federal staff of the local Natural Resources Conservation Services.

Students from Chandler Christian, Clarkfield Area Charter School, Edgerton, Ellsworth, Fulda, Heron Lake-Okabena, Hills-Beaver Creek, Immanuel Lutheran, Lake Benton, Lakeview, Luverne, Murray County Central, Mountain Lake Christian, New Ulm Area Catholic, New Ulm Middle School, Pipestone Area, Red Rock Central, Round Lake-Brewster, Sleepy Eye, St. Mary’s – Worthington, and Worthington Middle School.
