Howard Konkol’s 1956 Kimball football team inducted into school’s athletic ‘Hall of Fame’

KIMBALL — The 1956 Kimball football team, being honored this week with its induction to the school’s athletic hall of fame, pulled off something that may have never been accomplished before and may never be again.

Sure, the Cubs went 8-0 and were part of a 35-game unbeaten streak that at the time was a state record. Teams have done that, though.

And yes, the Cubs were unscored upon, outscoring their opponents 293-0 in ‘56. That’s happened, too.

What set this group apart is that it played six eight-man games, then finished the year with a pair of 11-man victories. Eight-man football has long disappeared from the Minnesota high school football landscape. The tiniest of schools play nine-man football in Minnesota. And, Kimball has played 11-man football ever since.
