For the fourth straight time, the Murray County Central / Fulda varsity girls are Red Rock Conference team champions.

Paced by the individual first-place finish of sophomore Morgan Gehl, along with strong All-Conference performances by a pair of sister combinations, the Rebels convincingly won the five-team meet at the KOA Campground in Adrian Monday (October 15), competing on a flat course on a cold afternoon with the temperature just above 40 degrees.

The top five Rebels finished in places 1-5-6-7-10 to produce a winning score of 29 points.

Southwest Minnesota Christian / Edgerton (2-8-9-13-14) finished second with 46 points, while Mountain Lake (4-11-12-21-22) was third with its score of 70. Adrian (3-17-19-20-27) was fourth with 86 points and Heron Lake-Okabena (24-28-29-30-31) was a distant fifth with a total of 142.

“We thought that we had enough depth through our lineup to win the conference again,” summed up Rebels’ head coach Dominick Damm. “Morgan, as usual, was tremendous up front and the rest of our scoring runners ran very well, each one of them earning individual All-Conference honors.”

Gehl, who is Minnesota’s fourth-ranked Class A girls’ cross country runner, remained undefeated for the 2018 season as she cruised to a near three-minute victory, clocking a time of 18:52.5 over the four laps of the quickly-created course, which likely measured a bit over 5,000 meters.
