The MCC girls were back in action Thursday night after having the entire Christmas break off. The Rebels played host to another team who also was on break due to poor weather conditions. With a couple weeks away from the court, it’s expected to be a bit rusty as both teams got back into the flow of competitive varsity basketball. The game, however, turned into a high scoring affair filled with some great plays followed by many mistakes. The Rebels played the best four minutes of basketball when it mattered the most.

“I am not sure you can find two more evenly matched teams to play one another,” says Joel Herrig. The Rebels and the Knights are similar in size, depth, talent, and the game plan for both teams is similar as well.

Murray County Central came into the game 5-4 while the Knights were 4-4. With both teams’ records so close, a close hard fought game was expected and that is exactly what happened in Slayton.

The first half was filled with turnovers and free throws along with streaks of offense thrown in. Both teams saw leads of six points in the first half as the momentum swung back and forth. The Knights led early, 6-0, but just a few minutes later the Rebels took a 9-6 advantage.

Montana Beckmann led the Rebels in this game offensively. She scored the Rebels first five points of the game and led the Rebels with nine first-half points. Ines Rios Rus was charted with eight in the first half and Brianna Schmitz, coming back off an injury, scored seven first-half points.

The Knights were led by 6’0″ center, Haley Muenchow, scoring 11 first-half points. Kalleigh Carr and Brooke Thomsen chipped in with seven and six points respectively. MCC built a 29 to 23 lead until the Knights went on a big run the final five minutes of the first half. RTR led at halftime 37-31. Both teams turned the ball over 18 times. The key to the Knights was their terrific rebounding which doubled the Rebels total.
