A turban, the pixie, a cloche, a flapper, a beehive or tambourine….no they’re not names of tomato varieties or new dance moves. They’re the definitive styles of the plethora of hats owned by Mary Mattson of Lake Wilson.

Mattson, also known as Mary Ellen in parts in and around her home town of Balaton, is the keeper of more than 300 vintage hats.  It is safe to say that she knows quite a little about each and every one of them.

“There’s a story with each of them,” Mattson says, smiling as she picks up her favorite hat and dons it atop her head.  The fedora style lady’s hat is one that she wore while in Sioux Falls one day and elicited more than one compliment on her attire.
