Awarded silver medal for 2012 Frontenac wine
By: Sheila Crowley Murray County News Staffwriter Painted Prairie Vineyard, near Dovray, Minnesota is gearing up for their yearly grape harvest. The vineyard, started in 2006, has nearly 1,000 vines, consisting of three different varieties - LaCrescent, Frontenac and Marquette. These three varieties produce five different wines and a sixth variety is produced with grapes purchased from Iowa.

Kim and her husband, Ben, moved to the Dovray area in 2006 purchasing 17 acres of land of which 1 1/2 acres contains the vines. Ben had previously brewed his own beer and with his chemistry background, decided the landscape was perfect for a vineyard.

“We initially decided to plant a few vines and see how it went from there,” commented Kim. After planting a few in 2006 and then adding more 2007, the couple decided they either needed to decide what to do with all the grapes. “It was too much for us to use just ourselves,” explained.
