Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church Slayton, MN at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2013 with the Rev. Dawn Quame officiating.

Ruth VanDyke, the daughter of Arthur and Alvina Olson Petersen, was born on April 25, 1928 in Alpha, Minnesota. She grew up in the Alpha and Jackson, Minnesota areas and attended school, graduating from Jackson High School in 1946. Ruth attended Mankato Technical College in Mankato, Minnesota. Ruth was united in marriage to Stanley VanDyke on August 21, 1949 in Petersburg, Minnesota. After their marriage they owned and operated the VanDyke Grocery Store in Mankato. In 1954 they moved to Murray County where they farmed for more than 30 years.  In 1991 they moved into Slayton and Ruth began working at the Country Host and then the Slayton Meal Site after her retirement. Ruth remained at home after Stanley passed away in February of 1997. Ruth passed away at her home in Slayton on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the age of 85. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Slayton. Ruth was very devoted to her church and served on numerous boards and was active in Ladies Aid, Faith Circle, Quilting, Meals on Wheels and Altar Guild.  She also belonged to the Slayton VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.  Ruth was devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved being outside tending to her flowers and enjoyed nature and she loved any type of music.

Survivors include her four sons: John (Andrea) VanDyke, Brandt, SD, Dave (Susie) VanDyke, Canton, SD, Mark VanDyke, Slayton, MN and Daniel VanDyke, Slayton, MN; six grandchildren: Amy VanDyke, Rachel (Ryan) Schafer, Brigitt (Matt) Gunderson, Heather VanDyke, Justin VanDyke and Erin Nielsen and five great-grandchildren: Kaden, Gavin, Chase and Parker Schafer and Gabriel VanDyke. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister Gladys Vagle; brothers: Gordon, Arthur and Richard Petersen and two nephews: Gerald Vagle and Marty Petersen.

Funeral services were held at Christ Lutheran Church Slayton, MN at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 13, 2013 with the Rev. Dawn Quame officiating. The organist was LaDean Lang. The soloist was Nikki Cheskie.  The honorary pallbearers were Kevin Petersen, Brad Petersen, Chuck Petersen, Mark Petersen, Randy Petersen, Steve Petersen and Michael Clark. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN. The Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton assisted the family with arrangements. Sign guestbook online at
