The future of Slayton's annual celebration, "Days of '87", was discussed Monday night at the Slayton City Council meeting. Mayor Miron Carney had reported previously that the city's Economic Development Authority (EDA), which had funded the celebration in prior years, has indicated that it no longer wishes to do so. The local Chamber of Commerce will not take the reins either, stating that their organization is a regional one, thus not appropriate for it to be associated with the planning and financing of it, leaving the burdon uncertain at this point.
"Is it important to Slayton?" Carney asked the council, adding that he is seeking a barometer on the subject. Personally, he noted he has put a great deal of time into the celebration and feels strongly about continuing the annual event. Council member Dean Streff commented that with the success of last year's 125th celebration, he would hate to just drop it at this point.
