1921 - James Joseph Sweely - 2013
James Sweely was born on July 14, 1921 in Tracy, Minnesota to Joseph and Rose Brady Sweely. He grew up in Tracy and graduated from Tracy High School in 1940. James enlisted in the United States Army on September 21, 1942. Following his honorable discharge on September 12, 1945 he returned to Tracy. On May 28, 1947 he and Margaret (Peggy) Ahrens were married at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, Minnesota. Following their marriage they made their home in Slayton and raised their three children. Peggy passed away on March 29, 1978. James worked for Botsford Lumber, which later became UBC in Slayton. In 1985 James stared his own construction company, which he ran until his retirement in 2000. James passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Our House Hospice Home in Slayton at the age of 91. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton where he served as usher. He also was a member of the Slayton American Legion Post. James enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking.
Survivors include his three children: Jack Sweely, Slayton, MN, Michael Sweely, Phoenix, AZ and Becky Sweely, Hopkins, MN; two grandchildren, Justin and Christina Sweely and Jasmine and Lee Steffen; four great-grandchildren: James Sweely, Carli Sweely, Jameson Steffen and Mason Steffen and special family friend, Jan Sweely, Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Peggy and one sister Donna and her husband Les Imker.
Funeral services were held at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. with Fr. James Seitz officiating. The organist was Patty LeClaire. The song leader was Joanne Halbur. The pallbearers were Justin Sweely, Lee Steffen, Jim Michaelson, Dan Conway, Dave Herring and Bill Neilson. Interment at St. Ann’s Cemetery Slayton, MN.
