Slayton's newest fire chief Paul Louwagie and his wife, Deb, came to Slayton to make their home in 1987. It was but a year later that he joined the volunteer fire department and has since been an active member, holding several officer positions through the years. Now he takes over the helm of chief from Rick Clercx, who stepped down but is still an active member of the department.
Being a member of the fire department has, from the start Louwagie says, been about his love of helping people and stepping up to the challenge to do so in many different situations. And, he adds of his new position, "I'm not too old for the job!" Louwagie has moved up through the ranks of the fire department through the years, serving as a Captain, 2nd Assistant Chief and then 1st Assistant Chief. The move to Chief was natural and the veteran is surely up to the challenge.
