Appearing before the Slayton City Council in the meeting's public forum, Ben Carlson posed questions to the council regarding the increased hours that his wife, Deputy Clerk Kari Carlson, is now working since council action lengthened the city office business hours an hour earlier in the morning. Carlson, who used to work from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with a half hour lunch break is now beginning work at 8:00 a.m. every day.
As an unsalaried, non-exempt employee, Carlson continues to be paid for 40 hours of work with no overtime allowed. Challenging the city clerk Josh Malchow's stance that there would be no increase in benefits or wages paid, Carlson said, "I think there was a change in the benefits. You're changing what she earns per week," he continued, adding that she is not really salaried and gets paid for 40 hours a week.
