Swede Swenson's favorite adage goes like this: "Yesterday is history, today a gift, and tomorrow is a mystery." That's advice that he keeps close to his heart every day. Swenson, who just celebrated his 93rd birthday on October 7, shows few signs of slowing down. Though at this juncture in life, he certainly has earned the right to do so.
Swenson picked up the moniker "Swede", for which he is widely known, many years ago when he went to work for the Rupp Construction company in Slayton. "I was a farm boy and had worked for farmers in the area," Swede remembers. One day he got upset with his employer and determined, drove into town to get a job at Rupp Construction. "I talked to Earl [Rupp] and I got the job!" Swede remembers. "Big Swede's coming to work here," someone said, and the name stuck for good.
