The Slayton Fire Department was summoned to a house fire located approximately four miles east of Slayton off of County Road 8 at 1:11 p.m. last Wednesday afternoon.

The Currie Fire Department was also called to the scene and Fulda was asked to bring air masks due to the massive amounts of smoke.

The home, owned by Kevin Wynia, was completely engulfed by the time fire fighters arrived on the scene. The renter, Chase Sanderson, Jasmine Ford and their 14 month old daughter managed to escape the fire and sought out medical service at the Murray County Medical Center, Slayton. Chase was later transferred to Sioux Falls for smoke inhalation released on Thursday.

Chase had apparently been cooking something on the stove and decided to move smoke while it finished cooking. In the meantime it caught on fire. He rushed back into the house after seeing smoke and woke Jasmine to get her out the patio and then was forced to re-enter thru the main door to retrieve their daughter who was sleeping upstairs. Somehow, amidst all of the smoke he crawled his way back outside.

The home is considered a total loss and their belongings were destroyed as a result of the fire.

The Ford and Sanderson familes are accepting any donations that may help the couple. Aryanna wears 24 month clothes while Chase wears 36 or 38x34 pants, 2XL shirts and size 12 shoes. Jasmine wears 11/12 pants, M-L shirts, shoes are 8 1/2. They are also in need of any furniture including walker, high chair and crib.

An accouont has also been set up at Minnwest in Tracy. Monetary donations sent to Minnwest Bank, 250 3rd Street, PO Box 1069, Tracy, MN 56175, account #2040036580.
