The anticipation that had been held with rapt awe culminated with a grand successful celebration that dedicated the paving of Highways 17 and 47 on Monday, October 1, 1932. With cooperative weather that day, colored street lights and flags adorned downtown Slayton. The south end of the roped off street near the Methodist Church and Co-operative Oil Station was anchored with a large tent next to a long eat stand.
Things were kicked off with a parade that formed at 11:30 that morning in front of the Court House. It marched north to the location between Farmers’ Lumber and the tourist park. There a white ribbon had been stretched across the pavement.
Little John Roger Engebretson dressed in a snow white suite led the parade drawn in an express wagon with a miniature Uncle Sam portrayed by little Jerry Bennett. Bennett was garbed in the traditional red and white trousers, swallow tail coat, and tall hat.
