Drying and Storing Wet Soybeans

October 28, 2009

Mike Boersma - County Extension Educator with the University of Minnesota Extension Service in Murray and Pipestone Counties
The month of October has not been ideal for soybean harvest in southwest Minnesota, which will likely leave many producers looking at options for harvesting, drying, and storing wet soybeans.

Ideally, soybeans should be harvested at or near 13 percent moisture. Soybeans at higher moisture levels could be penalized at marketing and also run a higher risk of spoilage when stored for significant periods of time. On the other hand, soybeans that are drier than 13 percent weigh less, and therefore, will be worth less at marketing. Soybeans drier than 13 percent moisture also have a higher risk of splitting during handling.
