May 24, 2006

Open House scheduled for June 4th
End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum will open for the 2006 tourist season on Saturday, May 27, at 10:00 a.m. This is a change from previous years. Many tourists visiting our area have requested we be open on the Saturday of the long Memorial Day weekend so they can enjoy the amenities End-O-Line Park has to offer.

The schedule for Memorial Day weekend is as follows: Saturday, May 27, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, May 28, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Monday, May 29 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The regular summer scheduled hours are as follows: Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.

Louise Gervais, Director of End-O-Line Park announces some additions to the staff. David Hansen, who has served as assistant director for many years will continue in that position. Another assistant director’s position was created this spring. Christy Surprenant was hired to fill that position.

Those returning as summer tour guides are Cody Arnold, Megan Meyer, Dani Jones and Beth Bonnstetter. Additional tour guides recently hired are Scott Beech and Emily Baumann.

Open House at End-O-Line Park and the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the building of the replica of Murray County’s first courthouse is set for Sunday, June 4. Lake Shetek State Park is also having open house on the same day and we encourage everyone to attend both. Open House at End-O-Line Park starts at 1:00 p.m. with free admission and all the buildings will be open for you to visit. Refreshments will be served. The Ground Breaking Ceremony for the courthouse will start at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy another part of Murray County’s history. Our staff will be happy to accommodate the many tourists who travel to End-O-Line Park and Museum and encourage them to visit other places of interest in Murray County and Southwestern Minnesota. Watch the papers for new developments taking place this summer. We welcome you to enjoy an interesting new season with us.

The End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum staff wish to invite the public to their open house on Sunday, June 4, 2006. Tours and admission to the park on that day will be free. At 2:00 p.m. there will be a short groundbreaking ceremony for Murray County’s First courthouse which will be re-built to get ready for the 150th Anniversary of the County in 2007. Members of the Murray County Board of Commissioners, the Mayors of Currie and Slayton and other special guests will be in attendance.

“We feel honored that we will be able to re-build Murray County’s First Courthouse here at the End-O-Line Park”, states Louise Gervais, Director of the End-O-Line Park and Museum. “The park started as a community pride project by two young 4-H members. I am sure they would be proud to know we are going to be adding such an important piece of our county’s history to our park to share with future generations.”

In 1857, the Territorial Legislature established Murray County and in 1872, Murray County elected the first commissioners and held their first meeting. The county seat in Currie was established in 1873 and in 1882, the first official courthouse was built. Starting in 1886, the battle for the county seat began and it wasn’t settled until 1889, when the records were “officially” moved to the new county seat in Slayton.

Bring your family to the park on June 4 and learn more about the county seat debate and enjoy the other rich history of End-O-Line park has to offer.
