Dave Herrig, RELAY FOR LIFE CO- CHAIR

I am very proud to have been selected as one of the co-chairs for Relay for Life. Hopefully, my story will help everyone realize how important it is to keep working to find a way to defeat this rotten illness.

My walk with cancer is a little different than most. It began in December of 2017. I went to my yearly checkup and to my surprise, my doctor decided they should do a biopsy. Then three days before Christmas I received a call saying that the test came up positive for prostate cancer. Wow! That was a very rotten Christmas gift.

We went to more doctor visits and decided that radiation was the best option for the treatment. The plan was to start 39 treatments on the first of April. My doctors said don’t worry, prostate cancer is the easiest cancer to treat. Sure if it’s not yours. Needless to say, I was scared half to death.

Then on February 20th, we received a call that changed everything. The call was from my daughter Meg, “Could you guys come right away the baby is very sick”. We raced to Brewster to watch the other five kids. Meg called and said that they were going to Sioux Falls by ambulance and would call later. Then the call came, Jeff had leukemia.

That news turned our world upside down. The thoughts of my cancer disappeared. All we could think of is that the good Lord would help our grandson and Meg and Chad’s family through this.
