In a close team race with the Pipestone Area Arrows, the Murray County Central / Fulda Rebels prevailed with a two-point victory in the varsity girls’ race of the eight-team Rebel Invitational high school cross country meet at the Slayton Golf Course last Thursday, September 27.

The annual meet was postponed two days because of the rain-soaked conditions on parts of the course and a revamped route was created for this year’s event.

Running in cool conditions on an overcast late afternoon, the Rebel girls performed in grand fashion on the home course Thursday and were especially strong up front among the first three girls, getting a trio of top-seven finishes.

Those up-front performances from sophomore Morgan Gehl (first, 18:58), eighth-grader Ashley Overgaauw (sixth, 22:44) and eighth-grader Amanda Overgaauw (seventh, 22:46) gave the Rebels a mere 14 points (1-6-7) from their top three.

Pipestone, which put all five of its scoring runners ahead of the Rebels’ fourth, was not as strong up front as the Arrow top three (5-8-9) tallied 22 points.
