An exceptionally well-balanced performance from its top six runners yielded the Red Rock Conference team championship for the Murray County Central / Fulda varsity boys’ cross country squad Monday (October 15) as the Rebels edged defending champion Mountain Lake Area to reclaim the title.

Running on a new course at the KOA Campground in Adrian, the Rebels won the boys conference crown for the sixth time in the past seven years. The meet was moved from the Adrian Golf Course to the campground when it was determined that the golf course was still too saturated from last week’s torrential rains.

“It worked all right,” summed up Rebels’ head cross country coach Dominick Damm about the campground where he ran several times as a Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield Silver Bullet in the early 1990s. “The course was OK for a small meet like our conference, but it would not have worked very well for a bigger meet like the Adrian Invitational which had to be canceled last week.”

As it turned out last week’s cancellation may have worked in Damm’s favor.

“Without a meet last week, we were able to really get in some good practices,” he said. “We got a distance run in, we had a good strength workout, and we had a day of speed. We just really had a great week of practice and I think that it sure showed in how we ran as a team to win another conference title.”
