If anyone wonders what is taking place at the Murray County Fairgrounds they can be assured it is not madness run amok. It’s organized chaos. Just ask those in the various buildings. All seem to be busy and staying on task, folding, stacking, pricing, sizing and more. It is time for the annual Murray County Hospice Rummage sale which will get underway on Tuesday and run through Saturday.

If you ask anyone of the many volunteers who worked for a good week sorting and sifting through the donations this year how the event started and who the early volunteers were, fingers would start pointing and heads shaking. No one seems to want to take credit for the immense event that has been going on since 1993. That’s right. Twenty-three years!

What started as a simple rummage sale in the back of the Slayton Shoe Repair on Broadway Avenue in Slayton has blossomed into what can only be described as a mammoth endeavor that is a credit to many, many people.

Leroy Prahm who has run the Slayton Shoe Repair for many years remembers when the event first started in the back of his shop. “People would rent the space and hold a rummage sale,” he explained. “Then, they would leave the stuff that didn’t sell. I think I talked to Kay Onken about having a sale for Hospice.”
